When someone first discover they have an MTHFR variant, the reaction is often the same:
Confusion… followed quickly by taking supplements like methylfolate or methylcobalamin. On the surface, this seems logical. But what often gets missed is that MTHFR is not a complete instruction manual for supplementation. It’s a piece of information not a full plan. What you need is a road map.
The problem with a “gene – supplement” approach
One of the most common misunderstandings around MTHFR is the idea that: Gene variant = specific supplement requirement. But Methylation is influenced by multiple interacting systems, including:
- your current and changing nutrient status
- how well your body’s digestion and absorption is working
- your diet and lifestyle and even your environment
- cofactors
- underlying health conditions
This means two people with the same MTHFR variant can have completely different needs.
Where is the focus?
When the focus stays only on genetics, people miss context and supplementation becomes guesswork.
My 4-part framework
When working with MTHFR and methylation, it’s helpful to zoom out and consider four key areas:
1. Genetic context: What your genes suggest about potential tendencies — not fixed outcomes.
2. Nutrient status: What your body actually has available right now based on diet, absorption, and testing.
3. Functional context: How well your body is absorbing, converting, and using nutrients.
4. Response over time: How your body actually responds to changes, rather than assuming outcomes.
A note on simplicity
This doesn’t mean methylation is something to over-complicate. But it also doesn’t mean it’s not something to oversimplify. The goal is to make more informed decisions.
A starting point
I’ve put together a short guide that walks through this framework in a more structured way.
It’s designed to help you slow down the decision-making process just enough to avoid common mistakes and understand what actually matters before making changes.
